MEET STEVE VERES

Steve Veres has dedicated more than two decades to public service with a focus on expanding educational

opportunity, strengthening public institutions, and creating pathways to economic opportunity for working families.

Steve is one of the Vice Presidents of the Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees and has

served on the Board since 2011, with a two-year interval in his service. LACCD is the largest community college

district in California, encompassing nine colleges serving communities throughout Los Angeles.

college tuition-free and expand paid internships so that students can gain meaningful work experience, build

professional networks, and earn income while pursuing their education. He has also championed efforts to address

barriers to student success, including transportation, food insecurity, and housing challenges.

Steve has played a significant role in overseeing the modernization of LACCD’s nine colleges. He has championed investments in classrooms, laboratories, career-training facilities, clean energy, sustainability, and campus infrastructure designed to prepare students for the jobs and economy of the future.

The son of immigrant, working-class parents, Steve understands the role public education can play in opening

doors for families. He began his public service as a student activist at UCLA and has worked as a teacher, college

instructor, journalist, and news editor.Steve later served as Mayor of the City of San Fernando, where he worked on public safety, housing, parks, and neighborhood improvements. His regional public service has also included work on transportation, water, air quality, conservation, and environmental infrastructure.

Steve has extensive experience in the California Legislature, having worked for Senator María Elena Durazo,

former Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León, and former Assemblymember Cindy Montañez. His

legislative work has included expanding access to tuition-free community college, securing funding for new parks in

Los Angeles communities, creating California’s Homeless Hiring Tax Credit, and strengthening California’s Film

and Television Tax Credit. Steve also serves on the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, where his work has focused on expanding access to parks and the coast, conserving open space, strengthening climate resilience, and connecting working-class communities to public lands. He has additionally served with Friends of the Los Angeles River and the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee, working on cleaner transportation and environmental

infrastructure.
